TEAR DROP BOMBARDIERS Model #8-5 - $125
First chosen by heroic WWII generals such as Douglas MacArthur, Bombardiers became coveted symbols of courage and daring when test pilots of the mid-twentieth century made the look famous as sunglasses. Originally designed for those who needed rugged eyewear with a maximum field of view and protection from long hours flying in the sun's glare, the style was adopted by police officers and FBI agents. Finally, people who wanted the same authoritative look chose them as prescription eyewear for everyday indoor use. They were rediscovered when Tom Cruise sported them in Top Gun, and today rock stars such as Lenny Kravitz wear them onstage.
Our updated version is made of a warm gold finish over stainless steel. The double-barred bridge is supported by clear, molded plastic, which appears like a crystal against the gleaming gold. This design evenly distributes the weight of the frames and extra-large lenses, avoiding the need for nose pads. Spring hinges comfortably adjust to the width of your head. The sturdiness and strength of these overtly masculine frames is softened by the ovoid sweep of the lower rims, which bow outward over your cheek.
Due partly to their heroic associations, these frames suggest a sense of resolve and inner strength in the wearer. In addition, the upper metal bar subtly mimics a furrowed, concentrated brow, furthering the sense of command and stature. When worn as sunglasses, Bombardiers recall and continue their legacy as the look of choice for heroes
